1/2 cup solid vegetable shortening 1/2 cup butter or margarine (use vegetable shortening and 1/2 teaspoon Wilton Butter Extract for very white icing) 1 tsp. Clear Vanilla Extract 4 cups sifted confectioners sugar (approx. 1 lb.) 2 tablespoons milk (Use 3 to 4 tablespoons of light corn syrup to thin if needed.)
1. Cream butter and shortening. Add vanilla. Gradually add sugar, one cup at a time, on medium speed. Scrape sides and bottom of bowl often. Icing, at this point, will appear dry.
2. Add milk and beat at medium speed until light and fluffy. Keep icing covered with damp cloth until ready to use.
