1 tablespoon butter 1 tablespoon vegetable oil 1 1/2 cups finely chopped onion 4 slices stale bread 1 cup milk 1/4 cup cream 2 eggs 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley salt to taste 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1 teaspoon toasted sesame seeds
1. Preheat oven to 325 degrees.
2. In a large skillet, melt butter with oil.
3. Cook onion slowly over low heat until tender and golden, about 30 minutes. Do not brown. Set aside.
4. Butter a 1-1/2 quart casserole.
5. Butter each bread slice lightly on both sides.
6. Cut into cubes and spread half over the bottom of the dish.
7. Sprinkle with the onions. Top with remaining bread cubes.
8. Whisk together the milk, cream, eggs, Worcestershire sauce, parsley, salt, and pepper.
9. Pour over bread mixture.
10. Sprinkle with sesame seeds.
11. Bake until pudding is fluffy and top is crispy golden, about 45 to 50 minutes.
