Squares: 3/4 cup sugar 1 stick margarine or butter, softened 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla flavoring 2 eggs 2/3 cup sifted all-purpose flour 1/2 teaspoon baking powder 1/4 teaspoon salt 1 1-oz square unsweetened chocolate, melted Fudge Sauce: 3/4 cup sugar 3 tablespoons cocoa powder dash of salt 2 tablespoons water 2/3 cup evaporated milk, undiluted 2 tablespoons margarine or butter 1 teaspoon vanilla flavoring
Squares:
1. Cream margarine and sugar; add vanilla and eggs, beating well.
2. Sift together flour, salt, and baking powder. Mix into creamed mixture.
3. Spoon half of mixture into another bowl; set aside.
4. Stir melted chocolate into remaining batter.
5. Drop both batters checkerboard fashion into a greased 8x8x2 pan or baking dish.
6. Bake at 350 degrees for about 25-30 minutes. Cool.
7. Cut into squares and serve with ice cream and fudge sauce.
Fudge Sauce:
1. Mix sugar, cocoa, and salt in saucepan.
2. Blend in water. Then add milk and bring to gentle boil. Cook, stirring constantly, for 3 or 4 minutes.
3. Remove from heat; stir in margarine and vanilla flavoring.
(Can be used in other recipes besides this one, served warm or cold.)
