1 cup milk 1 teaspoon granulated sugar 2 packets dry yeast 1 egg 1 tablespoon oil + oil for frying 1/4 teaspoon salt 3 3/4 cup flour
1. Heat milk, without boiling, add sugar and yeast.
2. Stir in egg, oil, and salt. Gradually add flour. Dough will be soft and sticky. Sprinkle with flour and cover with towel. Allow to rise for about 2 hours, until dough reaches top of bowl.
3. Roll dough onto floured surface and cut into circles. HINT: I usually use to the top of a drinking glass to cut them out, or a cookie cutter.
4. Allow dough to rest for another 30 minutes before frying.
5. Heat oil until hot, then reduce heat to medium/low. Carefully drop doughnuts 4-5 at a time into oil and allow to brown on one side (they will float) and then flip and brown other side. HINT: I find it easiest to use a Wok for the frying if you have one, but a regular pot is fine too.
6. Remove doughnuts from oil and set on paper towel to drain excess oil. Serve warm.
These are great plain, but I usually serve them with a variety of things to dip them in. Some ideas: cinnamon/sugar, yummy jams, apple butter. Enjoy!
