Cake: 2 sticks margarine or butter, softened 1/2 cup vegetable shortening 3 cups sugar 3 cups sifted cake flour 4 rounded tablespoons cocoa 1/2 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 cup milk 1 tablespoon vanilla flavoring 5 large eggs, brought to room temperature Frosting: 1/2 stick margarine or butter 2 squares unsweetened chocolate 1 box (1 lb) confectioners sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla flavoring
Cake:
1. Cream margarine and shortening thoroughly; add sugar and cream well.
2. Add eggs; cream with above, one at a time.
3. Sift flour two times and measure. Then add cocoa, baking powder, and salt, and sift once more.
4. Add flour mixture alternately with milk a third at a time, beginning and ending with flour.
5. Add vanilla flavoring and mix thoroughly.
6. Pour into greased and floured tube pan. Bake at 325 degrees for about 1 hour and 15 minutes, or until cake leaves sides of pan and tester comes out clean.
Frosting (optional)
1. Melt margarine and chocolate over low heat.
2. Add sugar and vanilla flavoring.
3. Beat well.
4. Spread on cake that has completely cooled.
